Abstract

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), a member of the Apiaceae family, is cultivated widely in the Mediterranean, Western Asia, and Southern Europe. Coriandrum sativum dried seeds and fresh leaves are used as flavoring agents in cooking. It is also a traditional remedy for managing different diseases in different cultures’ complementary and alternative medicine systems. Coriandrum sativum seeds are rich in lipids, essential oil, micronutrients, and nutritional elements. In addition, different parts of this herb contain a multitude of bioactive phytotherapeutics, which contribute to a wide array of pharmacological potential, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anxiolytic, antiepileptic, antidepressant, anticancer, antiinflammatory, antilipidemic, antihypertensive, neuroprotective and diuretic impacts. This chapter focuses on the medicinal uses and the biological activities of Coriandrum sativum to explore its potential uses as a functional food for the nutraceutical industry.
