Abstract

A technique has been developed which allows simultaneous measurements of extracellular pH and growth rate on the same oat coleoptile or lupin hypocotyl segment. Normal auxin-induced growth occurred but on the same segment it was not possible to detect any drop in pH prior to the increase in elongation rate. It is concluded that normal auxin-induced growth can probably begin with no drop in the pH of the cell wall.
