Abstract Plasma pressure near the feet of flux tubes in the solar atmosphere can drive a large, bidirectional current along the entire length of the flux tubes. In the corona, where the plasma pressure is negligible, this current is parallel to the field lines. The pressure-driven parallel current, which is called the Pfirsch-Schlüter current, can cause loss of equilibrium and disruptive phenomena. Here the author calculates the parallel current associated with the equilibrium of a plasma in magnetic and gravitational fields. The only major restriction on the calculation is the assumption of the existence of an enthalpy function.
