Abstract

A subglabrous herb normally described as biennial (Hegi Fl., ed. 1,5; Fl. Br. Isl.) but more often (and possibly always) perennial, with one or more erect, hollow, ridged stems up to 1.5 m (rarely 2.3 m) tall. Taproot simple, spindle-shaped (up to 20 cm long) with slender laterals up to 10 cm long. Basal and cauline leaves up to 70 × 25 cm (including petiole), 2- to 4-pinnate, the ultimate segments about 2 mm wide; blade triangular in outline. Petiole 2-3 mm wide, expanded at base, canaliculate. Mature intemodes usually 12-20 cm long. Bases of stems and petioles variably tinged with purple. A milky, sticky fluid exudes from the broken tissues of young plants (hence the common name «milk parsley»). Vigorous plants produce 1-8 lateral flowering branches
