Abstract
The Oban Massif forms part of the Precambrian to Early Paleozoic Nigerian basement complex and predominantly consists of metasediments, granodiorites, granites with minor dolerites and microgranitic intrusions. The granitic rocks are perluminous and exhibit an apparent trend of decreasing normative diopside and increasing normative corundum with increasing SiO 2. Major and trace element compositions of the rocks show a typical calc-alkaline differentiation trend. The metasedimentary rocks have chemical compositions similar to those reported from other parts of Nigeria. High K 2O contents and numerous K-feldspar porphyroblasts relate the granitic rocks to widespread basement rejuvenation during the Pan-African thermotectonic event and imply an origin by partial melting of the lower crust at presumably different structural levels.
