Abstract

A petroleum system approach has been applied to exploration of hydrocarbon accumulations in the fine-grained source rocks (in situ) of the Upper Jurassic Bazhenov Formation. The study area comprises the Khantey anteclize in the central part of the West Siberian Basin. The Bazhenov petroleum system is a natural closed system, charge and trapping being in a rather deep marine siliceous formation, which contains mainly kerogen types II and I with extremely high oil-generating potential. The hydrocarbon kitchens and accumulation space in the source rock formation are unusually small and are located along fault planes. The timing of oil charge was Tertiary. The effect of the oil generation in the Bazhenov system was the generation of overpressure. Primary migration of oil was focused into macrofracture networks, located adjacent to the fault planes. Fault connectivity and macrofractured reservoir compartmentalization control the distribution of the Bazhenov oil-charged traps.
