Abstract
Dry holes show that our exploration tools are not perfect. A trap containing petroleum is the end product of a sequence of events that involved deposition of a reservoir rock, seal formation, development of a trapping configuration, generation of petroleum, migration to the trap, and preservation of the trapped petroleum. Together, these form a “petroleum system.”
