Abstract
Unsettled political conditions in Indonesia and continued disappointing results of drilling operations in Australia, Papua, the Philippines, and other areas of the Far East make up a rather dismal picture for the exploration efforts in this vast area during 1957. In spite of the poor exploration results the over-all crude-oil production increased by nearly 24,500,000 bbls. during 1957, from an average daily production of 424,200 bbls. in 1956 to 492,350 bbls. in 1957. Of the total increase of 68,150 b/d, stepped-up production by Caltex Pacific Oil Company, in Central Sumatra, accounts for 58,514 b/d increase. Other areas of the Far East, except Burma and Communist China, showed slight decreases in production during 1957.
