Abstract

ABSTRACT This article establishes the political context for the observance of the centenary of the birth of South African and Jamaican novelist Peter Henry Abrahams. It tracks his career contributions in literature, broadcasting, print journalism and political activism in England and in Jamaica, following his early departure from his native South Africa. The article introduces the work of other contributors to this special edition marking the 100th anniversary of Abrahams' birth. It provides an entry point for new readers of his work and for scholars interested in understanding his 20th century humanist and pan-African perspectives that are still relevant today.
