Abstract

In 1935, the Detroit Tigers won the baseball World Series, Italy invaded Ethiopia, and James “Pete” Porter joined a seismic crew for Humble Oil. Detroit lost its title the next year and Italy lost interest in Ethiopia by 1941, but Pete Porter held onto his job until 1979. In the course of 44 years, he watched reflection seismology grow from a fledgling method to the powerful science of today. Pete Porter has perspective.
