Abstract

The concept of continuing bonds has not been labeled as such in the pet bereavement literature, although similar phenomena have been described in relation to pet loss. The author's current research program is a systematic attempt to examine and quantify continuing bonds expressions (CBE) experienced by bereaved pet owners. In order to investigate the similarities in the incidence of different types of CBE in pet loss and human loss, the authors compared their sample with a spousal loss sample involving the loss of a husband between 1 and 2 years ago. At a recent pet loss support group, three participants spontaneously described CBE and the comfort they received from their particular experiences. One of the authors consistently sees this occurrence in her monthly pet loss support groups-when one person describes feeling as if the deceased pet can be felt or heard, others nod their heads in agreement and understanding.
