Abstract

Striking while the iron is hot for action against chemical residues in food, a coalition of organizations has filed a lawsuit and a petition charging the Environmental Protection Agency with failure to safeguard the nation's food supply by permitting residues of carcinogenic pesticides that concentrate in processed foods. The plaintiffs are California's attorney general; three California children and their parents, who are exposed to pesticide residues in processed foods; the AFL-CIO; and environmental and consumer activist groups—the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Ralph Naderaffiliated Public Citizen. The issues they raise were also debated last week at a House subcommittee hearing, and earlier last month at House and Senate hearings. Both houses are now considering bills calling for steps the coalition backs.
