Abstract

Fishing plays a crucial role in the socioeconomic development of São Tomé and Príncipe, contributing significantly to employment, food security, and poverty reduction. This study aims to examine the state of sustainable fishing in São Tomé and Príncipe by analyzing fishing regulations and proposing specific policies to promote sustainability. The research employs various methodologies, including document analysis and reviews of reports from national and international institutions, as well as consultations with the Ministries of Natural Resources and the Environment. Despite numerous initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable fishing, São Tomé and Príncipe has yet to attain this goal due to insufficient monitoring and enforcement capabilities. Achieving sustainability in fishing requires: Enhancing the country’s monitoring and enforcement capacities; Assessing and improving domestic fisheries management; Strengthening fishing regulations; Ensuring their effective implementation.
