Abstract

A novel fluorescent probe (probe 6) based on perylene tetracarbonyl was designed, synthesized and characterized. Compared with other metal ions, the probe 6 showed a highly sensitive and selective fluorescence response to Cu2+, and the fluorescence was enhanced when binding to Cu2+. The dipyridine-like unit and OH group at the perylene bay position recognize Cu2+ in a 1:1 binding pattern and fluoresce through a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism. The binding framework between 6 and Cu2+ ions is supported by DFT computations. In addition, by fluorescence microscopy, probe 6 was shown to be able to monitor subtle Cu2+ changes in living cell imaging.
