Abstract

SummaryThe dendritic arbor is the site of complex interactions between synaptic excitation and intrinsic excitability. This interaction is determined by the ion channels expressed on the dendritic arbor. The expression and gating properties of these channels can be perturbed in conditions associated with epilepsy that lead to hyperexcitability. For an expanded treatment of this topic see Jasper’s Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies, Fourth Edition (Noebels JL, Avoli M, Rogawski MA, Olsen RW, Delgado‐Escueta AV, eds) published by Oxford University Press (available on the National Library of Medicine Bookshelf [NCBI] at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books).
