Abstract

A perturbation technique was used to determine large deflection response of viscoplastic clamped circular plates to uniform impulsive loading. Using a simple membrane model of the plate and assuming a strain rate dependence of the matched viscous type a non-linear eigenvalue problem for the determination of mode shape was formulated and solved by means of a modified Rayleigh-Schrödinger method. An explicit formula was derived for the maximum central deflection of the plate. The prediction of the present solution was compared with experimental results concerning impulsively loaded mild steel and titanium plates, recently reported in the literature. A remarkably good agreement was obtained for all test configurations considered.
