Abstract

A large perturbing effect of diamagnetic ions in aqueous solution on the positronium hyperfine splitting has been revealed through magnetic-quenching measurements. The hyperfine splitting amounts to ΔW=0.57 ΔWvac (at concentration ≥0.2 mol). This lowering, if interpreted on the basis of the model of Urbanovich, indicates that there exists a bound state of positronium in water and in aqueous solutions of diamagnetic ions.
