Abstract
An attempt has been made to give an account of the infra-red band-shifts of NH 3 on passing from the free molecule to NH 3 bound in complexes, based on a simple electrostatic model. The calculated shifts are very small compared with the experimental ones; the difficulties of the comparison with experimental data are emphasised and briefly discussed.
