Abstract

A perturbation method is used to analyze the equations governing flows in two aquifers separated by a semipervious stratum. The upper aquifer is phreatic (unconfined), while the lower one is semiconfined. The nearly horizontal flow approximation produces a coupled system of equations for both aquifers which, in particular, is nonlinear for the phreatic region. A parameter perturbation technique is shown as a convenient way of linearizing and uncoupling the equations. Analytical solutions of the perturbed equations for two simple problems are presented.
