Abstract

Educational perspectives in Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria : exercere, exercitare and exercitatio Quintilian constantly urges the orator to exercise in order to implement his recommendations and he does so by using the words exercere, exercitare and exercitatio. In order to appreciate his pedagogical methods and the importance of lifelong learning and training, this article clarifies the different meanings of these words according to their grammatical function. It studies separately physical training, and athletic comparisons and metaphors. Its concluding section analyzes their close relation to other terms such as natura, ars, studium, or even usus and consuetudo.
