Abstract

Powering new energy vehicles with low-carbon energy is a promising approach towards peak emissions and carbon neutral goal in China. Advanced nuclear energy systems are expected to provide green, reliable, and sustainable energy from 2030. Here we prospect the use of future Gen IV nuclear reactors and fusion reactors for the rapidly growing fleet of new energy vehicles. The next generation of fission and fusion power plants can not only generate electricity for battery electric vehicles but also produce hydrogen, an emission-free engine fuel, for fuel cell vehicles. Advanced nuclear energy systems could make sure that new energy vehicles deliver their full potential as low-carbon transportation.
