Introduction

Dr Ann Turner, Executive Director of AALAS, spoke to the group about the structure, purposes, and roles of associations. We highlight the role of professional associations in advancing laboratory animal science, with specific examples from our participation in this meeting in Cuba. Larger associations such as AALAS rely on trained professional staff to provide specialized services including governance, education, publications, communications, finance, information technology, human resources, and database management.
