Abstract

This introductory talk starts with a brief discussion of the background to this Conference and with the AFCRL interest in silicon carbide during the past decade. A number of items relating broadly to silicon carbide research are then discussed. The first item relates to distributions of effort on silicon carbide geographically, by organizations and authors within the United States, and by comparison with effort on other semiconductors. Next, the properties of silicon carbide are compared with other semiconductors by displaying them on appropriate tables and graphs. The talk ends with an estimate of the present position of silicon carbide as a semiconductor.
