Abstract

This supplementary issue of the Journal carries articlesthat reflect aspects of current research in psychiatry inMalaysia. The authors come from a number of univer-sities and many academic departments, spearheadedby the Department of Psychiatry of the National Uni-versity of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia).The papers published herein reveal the commonalitiesthat Malaysian psychiatry shares with the rest of theworld, as well as unique aspects conferred by thesociocultural setting in this multicultural country. AsMalaysian society is heterogeneous, many of thesepapers pay particular attention to sociodemographicfactors such as ethnicity in describing psychiatricdisorders.Psychiatric research in Malaysia for much of thelastcenturymainlyconsistedofdescriptivestudiesandcase reports.
