Abstract

Previous studies have shown that personality, especially neuroticism, has an important impact on male sexual response. In this study we wanted to verify this hypothesis, basing on the Big Five personality traits model. 698 male participants from Poland, aged 18–39. Our sample has completed an Internet survey, which contained questionnaire, such as: NEO-FFI (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness), STAI (anxiety as a state and trait) and IIEF. Age correlated positively, but weakly with EF and IS. No significant correlation between particular erectile functions and Big Five personality traits was indicated. Nevertheless total IIEF score was weakly and negatively correlated with Neuroticism (p<0.001), and weakly but positively both with Extraversion (p<0.05) and Conscientiousness (p<0.01). Neither anxiety as a state, nor trait was related to IIEF score. In the groups comparison with Mann-Whitney test between men declaring problems with erectile disorders and without erectile problems only Agreeableness levels significantly differentiated them (lower Agreeableness in ED group).
