Abstract

The goal of this research was to clarify the relationship of reproductive knowledge to personality functioning and adjustment. Data consisted of self‐reports and interview description from 200 men and 200 women. Subgroups scoring high and low on reproductive knowledge were identified, and high scorers were found to be differentiated from low scorers on personality dimensions pertaining to intellectual ability, efficacy, breadth of interests, and flexibility of personality organization. High scoring men also showed higher levels of impulse control and refinement, whereas high scoring women were found to be higher in ascendancy, independence, and unconventionality than low scorers. Men low in sexual knowledge were found to value stimulation seeking and impulse expression, and low scoring women were characterized as nurturant and dependent on others. The impact of vocabulary on these results was also explored. Finally, findings are contrasted with earlier results, and implications for adult sex education programs are discussed.
