Abstract

The primary purpose of the present report was to obtain an up-dated characterization of hospitalized female narcotic addicts on the MMPI. The secondary purpose was to determine how various admission categories differed in terms of personality characteristics. Four samples (total N = 395) of female addicts were contrasted through multiple discriminant analyses on MMPI and other psychometric data. The first discriminant function contrasted volunteer patients with prisoner patients and was tentatively labeled neuroticism vs character disorder. The second dimension appeared to refer to ethnicity-related differences in defensive styles. The mean profile on the MMPI for the total sample was a 4-spike.
