Abstract

Retrospective questionnaire surveys have associated extroversion with sexual hedonism and both introversion and neuroticism with sexual inhibition, guilt and fear. These findings have been related by Eysenck to his general theory of personality. In the present study. eight normally functioning adult males participated in eight laboratory sessions involving conditioning and deconditioning of sexual arousal. Direct relationships were found between magnitude of sexual conditioning and extroversion, and between magnitude of sexual deconditioning and introversion. The findings with respect to neuroticism were suggestive but nonsignificant. The findings are discussed in terms of Eysenck's (1967) general theory of personality and Gray's (1972) extension of that theory.
