Abstract

59 female high school students differing in scores on internal vs external locus of evaluation and in tolerance vs intolerance of ambiguity were exposed to inconsistency involving self-deprecation. Lower reported distress, compliance, and defensive projection were considered to indicate more ego strength. This pattern of response was a function of the combination of internal locus and tolerance of ambiguity.
