Abstract
Abstract Mr. H. B. Mathews, who retired from the position of Surveyor-General of N.S.W. last June, has left behind a record of achievement that falls to the lot of few public officers. Mr. Mathews was born at Deepwater, in the New England district, and received his early education at the Singleton Public School, then at the Singleton Grammar School, and finally at The King's School, Parramatta. From the latter institution he entered the Sydney University, from which he graduated B.A., with first-class honours in Mathematics. Entering the surveying profession, he served as a field assistant with his father, the late R. H. Mathews, Esq., then with W. M. Thomas on the detail survey of Sydney, and also with G. H. Legge, who subsequently became Valuer-General of N.S.W.
