Abstract

The study examined (1) the differences in personal health practices by family type-single parent versus two parent-and (2) the relationship of family characteristics-socialization practices, extent of social networks, health training efforts by parents, family SES-to personal health practices in single parent and two parent families. A convenience sample of 41 white, middle-class families (21 female headed single parent families and 20 two parent families) with at least one child 8-14 were interviewed in their homes using a modified version of Pratt's family health interview schedule. Partial support for hypothesized relationships between family characteristics and personal health practices was established.
