Abstract
Unlike cellular mobile radio systems, microcell based personal communications networks (PCN) have high initial, fixed costs, that do not scale with number of subscribers. Given these high fixed costs, and expected lower monthly subscriber fees, it is difficult to make a profitable business case for a conventional approach to implementation of a PCN system. However, cable TV systems already exist in many of the same areas that are attractive candidates for new PCN systems. These cable TV systems are already rich with spare optical fiber capacity and have the additional ability to transport fully modulated RF signals. The paper discusses how cable TV systems fit with emerging PCN systems and what advantages the use of such cable systems provides. >
