Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in The Netherlands. A large proportion of surviving breast cancer patients who have undergone surgery experience persistent pain. Persistent pain after breast cancer treatment (PPBCT) is often not recognized by the health care provider. The pathophysiology is only partly understood and is likely to be multifactorial. Various factors have been proposed to contribute to development of this pain. Nevertheless, these results are contradictory what makes drawing definitive conclusions extremely difficult.
