Abstract

Infrared studies of irradiated ppm mixtures of glutaraldehyde, Cl 2 and NO 2 in air have shown that one of the photo-oxidation products is peroxyglutaryl nitrate (PGN). The infrared spectrum and absolute intensities of PGN absorption bands were measured and compared to those of other peroxyacyl nitrates. In the atmosphere, PGN may be formed by the reaction of OH with glutaraldehyde in the presence of NO 2.
