Abstract

The β-decay theory of Behrens and Bühring is used to investigate the role of nuclear matrix elements in electron capture (EC) ratios. The (LI+LII)K and (MI+MII)K ratios are found to be independent of the nuclear matrix elements, but EC ratios for shells with different k = |κ| can be used to determine the nuclear matrix elements. The region of the decay energy where the LIIIK, MIIIL, and MvL ratios are large enough to be separated from the experimentally measured LK or ML ratios is determined. For three EC transitions, the ratio of non-relativistic and relativistic nuclear matrix elements are estimated from experimental EC ratios.
