Abstract
Recently, it has been found that copper-containing oxides have superconducting transition temperatures as high as 90 K. Further, Tc values up to room temperature have been rumored. The discovery that these oxides have the perovskite and related structure has renewed interest in these structures. An examination of the structure and properties of perovskite-type compounds may lead to a better understanding of these high Tc materials. In addition, this information may also help in learning how to prepare these materials reproducibly and aid in the search for still higher Tc superconductors. This paper provides some background information on perovskite compounds to describe what is known about the physics of new superconducting compounds.
