Abstract

The future of libraries is discussed considering both the predominant documents in each historical moment as media for the transmission of knowledge, as the type of societies that use them. Documents determine the life cycle of knowledge, which changes constantly. So, for example, we are now in the cycle of open science. Possible scenarios are ventured according to studies carried out by relevant organizations such as ALA (American Library Association), Sconul (Society of College, National and University Libraries), MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) y NMC (New Media Consortium).
