Abstract
THE present status of the quantitative theory of membrane transport processes in the absence of water-flow has been almost fully verified by the available experimental evidence. It is also a fact that in many artificial and biological membrane systems the effect of the water-flow, though undoubtedly present, can be neglected because of its small size. In other membrane systems this may not be so. It should be emphasized that the mere knowledge of rate of flow of a volume of water through a certain area does not give the velocity of the water-flow in the membrane.
