Abstract

The amnion and chorion taken from human term placentas have been characterized in terms of water permeability both by exchange diffusion, using tritiated water, and by bulk flow, caused by hydrostatic pressure applied to one side of the membrane. Solution of the appropriate equations yields values for an equivalent channel radius penetrating these membranes of 85 Angstrom units for the amnion and 76 Angstrom units for the chorion.
