Abstract

A promising calibration-independent microwave method is proposed for complex permeability extraction of metamaterial structures composed of periodic split-ring resonators. For the retrieval process, uncalibrated (raw) complex scattering parameter measurements of three measurement configurations in free-space are utilized. The advantage of the proposed method is that it employs the transmission-only scattering parameters of metamaterial slabs in the permeability retrieval. This approach improves measurement stability and accuracy and eliminates measurement errors, if any, occurring in reflection S-parameters of the slab. It is validated by retrieving the magnetic properties of various homogeneous metamaterial slabs.
