Abstract
Abstract The feasibility of using cultured mouse keratinocytes as an in vitro model for hairless mouse skin for permeability studies was explored in this study. Basal keratinocytes from neonatal mice were cultured onto microporous membranes using an air-liquid interface which has been reported to induce formation of stratum corneum. The permeability characteristics of the cultured keratinocytes were compared to hairless mouse skin using a series of n-alkanols. Because of the difficulty in inducing the keratinocytes to form a complete stratum corneum, the use of cultured keratinocytes as a model for studying solute transport is problematic.
