Abstract

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors, PMSM, have been known for a long time, but have primarily been used in high performance applications like servomotors. The development in power electronics and permanent magnet materials has now made the PMSM an attractive alternative for circulator pumps. The combination of high efficiency of this motor and ability through electronic control to adjust the pump to the actual heating requirements of the customer shows a dramatic reduction in the energy consumption. This article shows that with the new Grundfos Magna UPE 40-120 the energy consumption can be reduced to 45% of that of a traditionally uncontrolled circulator pump.
