Abstract

This paper deals with a stand-alone wind energy conversion system (WECS) using a permanent magnet brushless DC generator (PMBLDCG) and a battery energy storage system (BESS). The voltage and frequency controller (VFC) consists of a three phase diode bridge rectifier, a boost DC-DC converter, a BESS, a four-leg voltage source inverter (VSI) supplying three-phase four wire consumer loads. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is achieved using a control of one active switch of a boost DC-DC converter with sensed DC link voltage and its inductor current. The load-side four-leg VSI regulates the load voltage and frequency even with unbalanced loads. The proposed VFC performs the functions of a MPPT, a load leveler, a load balancer, a neutral current compensator along with a load voltage and frequency controller.
