Abstract

A system for inserting a selectable non–antibiotic marker gene into the chromosomes of soil bacteria is described. This insertion is accomplished using a bicomponent transposition system with the E. coli lacZY genes cloned between Tn7 termini. The system is designed so that unselected genes can be inserted along with the selectable marker thus enabling the permanent insertion of foreign genes into bacteria proposed for release into an environment such as soil.
