Abstract
Alopecia after irradiation was elegantly presented in a recent article (1). Note was made that radioprotectors—for example, WR-2721—showed efficacy in animal models (2, 3). The authors comment that they await Phase I-II trials in humans. These trials actually have been done at the University of Pennsylvania and were successful (S. Hahn, E. Glatstein, personal communication), and are now being tested at the University of Arizona as well. If we do not bring radiobiology quickly up to the level of technology, then, as one famed National Cancer Institute director once said, the linear accelerator will someday be put in the Smithsonian.
