Abstract

The peripheral nerve hyperexcitability disorders (PNHD) discussed in this chapter are defined by variable combinations of symptoms and signs reflecting the consequences of hyperexcitability of motor, sensory, and autonomic nerves. Whilst many specific inherited and acquired causes are recognized, most cases of PNHD are idiopathic. Autoimmunity is the basis of some idiopathic cases, and may also be relevant in some cases associated with a specific acquired peripheral nerve disorder.
