Abstract

HPA axis dysregulation is associated with 4.5-fold increased risk for suicide. It is not clear whether HPA axis dysregulation exists prior to suicidal behavior or is a consequence of an attempt. Until recently, the assessment of HPA axis activity prior to suicidal behavior would have been impossible. The analysis of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) provides a retrospective assessment of cortisol secretion over the past few months.
