Abstract

Purpose: Periostin (Postn) is a vitamin K-dependent and glutamate-containing matricellular protein in the fasciclin family. Postn was originally identified and characterized as osteoblast-specific factor 2 in murine osteoblasts. It is also found in the periosteum and collagen-dense fibrous connective tissues such as ligaments. Emerging evidence delineates that Postn is upregulated in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and it has been identified as a gene of interest in articular cartilage. Expression of Postn is induced following joint trauma such as destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) and leads to OA.
