Abstract
The sympatholytic effect of α2-agonists counteracts the sympathetic stimulation seen with the newer volatile anesthetic agents. Alpha-2 agonists enhance both the quality and the duration of conduction block with local anesthetics and its use for postoperative pain has been established firmly. The beneficial effects of α2-agonists in the immediate postoperative period appear to be particularly useful for vulnerable patients.
