Abstract

Social determinants of health can affect outcomes after surgery. Access to care represents a target to minimize disparities in surgical outcomes. While the implementation of video virtual visits seems on the surface to be the natural solution for improving patient access to care in rural communities, successful implementation of video virtual visits depends on local access to broadband internet. Written communication can be an effective method to provide information to patients, as long as principles of health literacy are upheld.
